08.09.2023

Nanticoke, Luzerne County, PA - Luzerne County Community College enters the Fall of 2023 with a number of anniversaries, new academic programs, facility updates, and the return of its athletic programs.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of LCCC’s nursing program.

The College highlighted the program during its Health Sciences Open House this past May and is planning an all-class golden reunion in September.

LCCC’s Foundation Inc. also celebrates a milestone this year. 2023 will be the 40th anniversary of the LCCC Foundation, a non-profit 501C organization established in 1983 to raise private and corporate revenues in support of Luzerne County Community College.

The LCCC Foundation revenues are given annually to the institution to offer fiscal support for scholarships and student assistance initiatives. The Foundation distributes over $400,000 in scholarships and student assistance support annually.

Academically, LCCC is offering several new programs for students beginning this Fall semester. LCCC has a new Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting.

Developed in partnership with Geisinger Medical Center, this program prepares students to manage medical office procedures and patient records.

LCCC will be offering an Associate of Science in Public Health. Graduates of this program will gain the skills and knowledge to protect and promote the health of individuals, families, and communities through education and research.

The “Thrive in Five” Advanced Manufacturing Program at Luzerne County Community College is a hands-on one-year certificate to prepare LCCC graduates for careers in the advanced manufacturing sector.

For those interested in a gaming degree, the College is offering a Certificate in Game Art & Design, and also a diploma in Esports Coach.

This Certificate of Specialty program will provide the opportunity to prepare for careers in existing and emerging technologies in digital design, interactive media, and virtual and augmented reality, and the coaching degree will prepare students in coaching and managing esports teams and competitions.

Speaking of esports, LCCC has added esports to its list of athletic programs this Fall.

The College’s Student Life and Athletics Department is putting together a team of esports players to compete in the new Trailblazer Esports Arena in the LCCC Campus Center.

The LCCC Esports Arena, in partnership with the NJCAAE league, will be supporting a variety of game competitions with a focus on Overwatch 2, Valorant, League of Legends, and Rocket League.

Running intramural, open, and invitational formats for most games in the league means LCCC will compete in numerous tournaments. LCCC’s other athletic programs, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Cross Country, Baseball, and Softball teams will be returning this Fall. Luzerne County Community College competes in the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIX.

State-of-the-art life science laboratories for both biology and chemistry instruction have been recently updated at the Greater Susquehanna, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazleton Centers, and a new micro-credentials lab has also been added to the Hazleton Center.
